The Neo-Renaissance structure was constructed between 1875 and 1880 during the reign of King Ludwig II, designed by architects Johann Kilian Stützel and Anton Roth as the Central-Säle. The facility hosted debutante balls and served as the first home of the Kaim Orchestra, the forerunner of the Munich Philharmonic. Following various uses—including office space for a sewing thread manufacturer and later an antiques shopping complex—the building was converted to a luxury hotel by hotelier Georg Rafael, one of the founders of Regent Hotels. The Hotel Rafael Munich opened in May 1990 and was subsequently acquired by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
