The landscape is punctuated by ancient holm oaks and granite outcrops (barrocais), characteristic features of Central Alentejo. The region receives 275 days of sunshine per year. The estate's diverse landscape supports 75 different bird species. Guests have full access to all gardens, including an organic vegetable garden that supplies the restaurant with fresh produce.
The estate has been inhabited since Neolithic times and contains 16 dolmens and ancient menhirs. São Lourenço do Barrocal was once the epicenter of megalithic culture in Central Alentejo. The property has evidence of Iron Age, Bronze Age, Roman, and Moorish occupation. In the nineteenth century, the estate was a thriving farming village with workshop rooms, a schoolroom, and a bullring, housing up to 50 resident families. The restoration has brought the historic monte (small village core) back to life as a luxury hotel while preserving its archaeological heritage.
