Amankila sits on the hill of Indrakila near Manggis, in Karangasem Regency on Bali's east coast. The name means "peaceful hill". The resort faces the Lombok Strait, with Mount Agung, a volcano revered in Bali as a home of the gods, behind it.
The surrounding area includes Manggis, Candidasa (Candi Dasa) and Tenganan, villages where traditional crafts are still practised. The resort runs a shuttle service around the Manggis and Candidasa area for guests.
Amankila was the third Aman hotel to open in Bali, after Amandari in Ubud and Amanusa on the Nusa Dua Peninsula. Aman Resorts founder Adrian Zecha opened it in March 1992.
