The property has housed visitors to Machu Picchu since 1911, initially serving as a residence for researchers and explorers. After several ownership transitions and operation as a conventional hotel, the property was completely renovated in 1999 under the supervision of Peru's National Institute of Culture when Orient-Express Hotels (now Belmond) assumed operations.
